At the beginning of human civilization, religion came to the world with equality
and guidance. In addition to God-given or heavenly religions, many man-made
religions have appeared on earth. However, very few religions have survived the
evolution of time. It is estimated that there are currently 4,300 religions in
the world, although the followers and spread of all religions are not equal.
Considering the number of followers, the top 10 religions of the world are:
Christ
Christianity
has developed around the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. According to the
beliefs of Christians, Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of mankind
from evil. The world's largest religion has about 240 million followers
worldwide. The Bible is their main scripture. There are two versions of the
Bible the Old Testament and the New Testament. A Christian place where all the
believers of Jesus pray together for the worship of the almighty God for the
salvation of the human soul is known as a church.
Islam
There
is no god but Allah, Muhammad (peace be upon him) is his messenger this is the
main belief of Islam. Followers of Islam, the world's second-largest religion,
are called Muslims. It is estimated that there are 1.6 billion Muslims in the
world today. However, Islam is that religion that grows faster than any other
religion in the world. Many recent studies suggest that Christian Europe may
become a Muslim-dominated region after half a century. 50 countries of the
world have Muslim majority. The Qur'an is the main scripture of Islam. There
are five main pillars of Islam - faith, prayers, fasting, Hajj, and Zakat. The
name of the Muslim place of worship is the mosque. Mecca-Medina is the holy
pilgrimage of Muslims. Muslims believe that Islam is the final religion chosen
by God, the Quran is the last scripture, and Muhammad is the last prophet.
Hindu
The third-largest religion in the world is Hinduism or Sanatan Dharma. 120 crore
people follow this religion. Almost all of them live in South Asia including
India. The organized and integrated journey of this thousand-year-old religion
began 500 years before Christ. The Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, Gita are the
main scriptures of this religion. A temple is a holy place of prayers and
adorations for Hindus. The majority of Hindus believe in polytheism. However,
some of them believe in monotheism. According to tradition, the number of gods
and goddesses in Hinduism is 33 crores. The three main Hindu deities according
to the faith of the people belonging to this religion are Brahma, Vishnu, and
Shiva.
Buddhist
Buddhism
is the fourth largest and one of the most sacred religions in the entire world.
An estimated 51 million people believe in this religion. Gautam Buddha, a pious
man from India, was the promoter of this religion. His preached beliefs and
philosophy of life are the basis of Buddhism. The shrine of this religion is
known as Math and the main scripture is Tripitaka. China possesses most of the
population of Buddhists in the whole world. Apart from that, Buddhists are in
the majority in Thailand, Japan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan.
Han
The largest religious community in China, the world's largest country by
population, is the Hanju or Han community. They believe in Chinese folk or the Han
religion. This fifth largest religion is considered by many to be a modified
version of the Han ethnic tradition. At present, there are around 400 million
followers of this religion.
Sikh
Sikhism
ranks sixth in terms of followers. An estimated 30 million people worldwide
believe in Sikhism. The leader of these monotheistic believers is called Guru.
The word Sikh means disciple. The Sikhs believe that no religion in the world
is the absolute truth, nor is any religion a complete lie.
Jewish
Judaism
is the seventh-largest religion in the world in terms of the number of followers.
The religion has more than one million followers, 43 percent of whom live in
Israel. Another 43 percent of Jews live in the United States and Canada. The
rest live in Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The history of this
religion is more than three thousand years old. The religion is thought to have
originated in the Middle East during the Bronze Age. Their scripture is the
Torah also called the Hebrew Bible and Tanakh.
Baha'i
The
Baha'i Faith is the eighth largest religious group in the world. In the
nineteenth century, Mirza Hussain Ali, or Bah Baha'iu'llh, propagated the
religion in what was then Persia (present-day Iran). Many refer to it as a
special belief, not a religion. ‘Kitabul Aqdas’ is the holy book of this
religion. The main goal of this religion is the unity and harmony of mankind.
More than 6 million people in more than 200 countries around the world believe
in the Baha'i faith.
Jain
The
Sanskrit word ‘Jain’ means conqueror. The main belief of Jainism is that there
were 24 'Tirthankaras' or victorious great men on earth who were the saviors
and teachers of mankind in their respective times. Rishabh was the first of
these 24 people to come to earth, who arrived millions of years ago. The last
arrival of the 24th Tirthankara Mahavira took place in the 5th century AD. It
is an Indian religion. Moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth-death-birth
through non-violence and self-control is the main pursuit of Jainism. 4 million
people follow Jainism, one-third of whom live in India.
Shinto
Shinto is a state religion, local and informal in Japan. It is a religion that has no God, no preacher, no scripture, no afterlife, no ritual. The essence of the Shinto religion is that there is no creator, but there are some independent souls or celestial beings whose name is Kami. These camels are benevolent to the people of the world. People of any religion have the right to visit the Shinto temple. It is estimated that 4 million people around the world believe in Shinto doctrine.
